  • Description

SALVAGE WORK HAS BEGAN ON THE UNITED STATES NAVY DESTROYER BACHE, WHICH HAS BEEN GROUNDED OUTSIDE RHODES HARBOUR IN GREECE SINCE TUESDAY (6 FEBRUARY).

THE BACHE IS CRACKED FROM STEM TO STERN. BUT A SPOKESMAN FOR THE U.S. SIXTH FLEET SAID THERE WAS NO DANGER OF THE DESTROYER SINKING OR KEELING OVER.

THE CREW ABANDONED SHIP SOON AFTER THE ACCIDENT, AND THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES. SHIPS OF THE SIXTH FLEET, INCLUDING THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER F.D. ROOSEVELT, WERE STANDING OFF RHODES.

THE FIRST SALVAGE JOB WAS THE REMOVAL OF EQUIPMENT AND PERSONAL BELONGINGS FROM THE BACHE. SALVAGE OPERATIONS WERE LIKELY TO TAKE SEVERAL DAYS, AND EXPERTS ARE STUDYING WAYS OF PUMPING OFF THE BACHE'S LOAD OF FUEL OIL.
