    MORE THAN A THOUSAND RUSSIAN AND EAST GERMAN TROOPS AND CIVILIANS CROSSED FROM THE EASTERN SECTOR OF BERLIN INTO THE BRITISH SECTOR, MAY 9, FOR A CEREMONY AT THE SOVIET WAR MEMORIAL TO MARK THE SEVENTEENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO.

    MANY OF THE CIVILIANS ARRIVED AT THE MEMORIAL BY SPECIAL BUSES AND WATCHED AS THE TROOPS MARCHED INTO PLACE ON THE PARADE GROUND BEFORE THE MEMORIAL. THE CEREMONY DREW LITTLE ATTENTION FROM THE WEST BERLINERS. THE ONLY INCIDENT DURING THE CEREMONY OCCURRED WHEN A MAN RAN ONTO THE PARADE GROUND. HE WAS REMOVED BY SECURITY FORCES.

    AMONG THE OFFICIALS TAKING PART IN THE CEREMONY WERE MIKHAIL PERVUKHIN. SOVIET AMBASSADOR TO EAST GERMANY. GENERAL ANDREI SOLOVIEV, SOVIET COMMANDANT FOR EAST BERLIN, AND GENERAL I.I. YAKUBOVSKY, THE NEW COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF SOVIET FORCES IN EAST GERMANY.

    AFTER THE WREATH-LAYING CEREMONY AT THE MASSIVE MEMORIAL, THE TROOPS WERE INSPECTED AND TOOK THE SALUTE BEFORE MARCHING BRISKLY BACK TO THE EASTERN SECTOR.
