  • Description

Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem are enforcing strict security measures among Arabs after the disturbances of the last few weeks.

In the town of Nablus on the West Bank - scene of some of he worst disorder - things were quieter on Friday (19 March) as military authorities took a firm security line.

Visnews cameraman Bob Weaver was forcibly restrained from filming while Israeli paratroopers were searching Arabs lined up outside Nablus post office. A senior officer demanded that he hand over his film; when Weaver refused he was told he could on filming so long as he did not show any troops in action.

Throughout Friday Israeli paratroops and border police set up random roadblocks in the Nablus, Tulkarm and Jenin area, stopping every car with a West Bank number plate and checking the occupants' papers. Pedestrians were also stopped and in many cases forced to stand with their hands flat on the nearest wall while troops searched them. Bob Weaver reports that there was no sign of any brutality but that one Arab told him later: "This is an outrage. It is our land and they treat us like animals."
Also on the West Bank, in the town of Hebron, paratroops were out in force in armoured patrol cars as Arabs came into the town to pray at the mosque. The atmosphere of the town was tense but quiet.

In Jerusalem security operations were focused on the Old City and the Temple Mount. Israeli armed forces cordoned Jerusalem off from the rest of the occupied Arab areas to thwart a demonstration called by guerrilla organisations and Moslem leaders.

The demonstration was to have been the climax to the wave of disturbances - which have been triggered by a reported plan to allow Jews to pray on the Temple Mount, once the site of King Solomon's temple, but now an important Islamic shrine.
