  • Description

Israeli air and artillery attacks in Southern Lebanon inflicted heavy casualties in and around the coastal port Tyre on Tuesday (24 April). The city had been under attack for the past four days and at least ten people were believed to have been killed, with forty others wounded.

SYNOPSIS: Tyre, with its numerous Palestinian refugee camps, became the main target for Israeli retaliation following Sunday's (22 April) beach raids on Nahariya. Palestinian guerrillas killed four Israelis, including two young children, in the raid. But israel's vengeance was both swift and sure. Tuesday's attack left large areas of the city damaged. In one three minute period, rockets slammed into one city area at the rate of one every two seconds. Various source estimated the number of dead at between ten and eighty.

Scores of families headed north out of the city, their belongings piled high on the backs of trucks and the tops of cars, as the heavy israeli bombardment continued relentlessly. But apart from this exodus, the streets were deserted.

Palestinian reports said that Syrian air force planes had also entered Lebanese air space during the day. The reports claimed the jets were there to protect Syrian peace-keeping forces in Lebanon. But, their presence raised the fear of the first Syrian-Israeli air battles since the 1973 Middle East War.

While the Israeli bombardment continued, those injured in the attacks were taken to hospitals for treatment. Heavily armed guerrillas manned checkpoints on all roads leading to the city. Lebanon's President Sarkis, in a statement on Wednesday (25 April), denounced the Israeli attacks and called for United Nations intervention.
