  • Description

New streams of lava from Mount Etna, Sicily's angry volcano, ground down across orchards and vineyards, bringing renewed fears to farming communities on the mountain slopes. Today (Friday) while the main lava flow headed steeply downhill towards the village of Sant'Alfio, cutting a minor road in the process, a breakaway stream headed for nearby Fornazzo--which narrowly missed destruction a few days ago.

SYNOPSIS: The relentless flows of lava, grinding down the sides of Sicily's Mount Etna, are bringing renewed fears for villages on the volcano's slopes. By Friday the plight of two villages looked desperate. And the thousands of tourists still in the area only added to the trials of villagers and farmers.

On Friday, the main lava flow was continuing to head steeply downhill towards the village of Sant'Alfio, cutting a minor road in the process. During the night, a breakaway flow branched off from the main lava stream high up the mountain and is now heading for the village of Fornazzo, where the three-hundred inhabitants nearly lost their homes several days ago.

As the lava ploughs on through their vineyards and orchards, the local people have been offering continual prayers. They believe that in 1928, their prayers were answered under similar circumstances, and a lava flow diverted away from a village.
