  • Description

Italy has won the top award at the Cannes Film Festival for the second year running. The Golden Palm Award, the premier prize, was presented on Tuesday (30 May) to "The Tree of Clogs", produced by the Italian State Television Company and direct ed by Ermanno Olmi. Like last year's Italian success, "Padre Padrone", this year's winner is a peasant drama acted by unknown performers. Its selection was unanimous by the nine-member jury who viewed 23 films from 15 countries in this year's festival.

SYNOPSIS: Isabelle Uppert of France - star of "Violette Noziere" - received from William Holden the Best Actress Award, an award she shared with American Jill Clayburgh who starred in "An Unmarried Woman". There was enthusiastic applause too for Ermanno Olmi, director of this year's best film who is highly respected in Italy but little known to the public abroad.

The prize for best director went to Nagisa Oshima of Japan who received his award from Lily Palmer. His film, "Empire of Passion" was a Franco-Japanese production, a pastoral love tragedy set at the turn of the century:
