  • Description

On the fifth anniversary of the outbreak of BOKA activities, Cypriot President_Elect Archbishop Makarios addressed large crowds in Archbishopric Square, Nicosia, Cyprus, April 1.

Two hundred and fifty uniformed veterans of BOKA - the Greek Cypriot guerrilla organisation that harried British troops - led a parade which included students and Trades Unionists.

They heard Archbishop Makarios accuse Britain of deliberately holding up negotiations and preventing the establishment of the Cyprus Republic. At present there is a dispute over the size of military bases Britain will retain in the island; Britain wants 120 square miles, and Archbishop Makarios will not concede more than 80. A cheering crowd heard him say that if deadlock continues he would call for a civil disobedience campaign against the British Government. "We shall strive to set up a Cyprus republic based on our own on the basis of the constitution worked out under the Zurich and London agreements".

But although the Greek Cypriot crowd was enthusiastic, his remarks did not meet with approval among other interested parties; a Greek government spokesman said Greece would not endorse the Archbishop's plan to set up a Republic in this way. Dr. Kutchuk, Vice President Elect and Leader of Turkish Cypriots called the Archbishop's speech "an ultimatum" which could cause "complete chaos, unrest and civil war".
