    There have been more demonstrations in Cyrpus by supporters of General George Grivea, the former anti-British resistance leader who is now a symbol of the movement of ENOSIS -- Union with Greece.

    This time the demonstrations were against the imprisonment of 20 Groves supporters who received prison sentences of from two to four months following disturbances last April. During the court hearing on Monday (8 January), about a hundred people surrounded the court building. After the judgment was read out they invaded the court room. Police stood by a as they banged desks and shouted anti-government slogans. The crowd grew to 500, but dispersed quietly after half an hour.

    On Tuesday (9 January) students in Larnade left their classes and gathered outside the local police-headquarters. This coverage shows them demanding the release of their jailed friends. They blocked traffic in the area and set up road blocks with chairs. Later the demonstrators marched through the town to the home of a local politician, where the police persuaded them to disperse peacefully.

    On Tuesday, the police headquarters at Lornace were besieged by students protesting at jail sentences imposed on twenty people who took part in a pro-Grivas demonstration last April. The students blacked traffic in the area as part of their protest.

    Later they besieged the house of a local politician, Councillor Christiphides, who is against union with Greece.

    The students demanded the release of their twenty colleagues, who had received sentences ranging from two to four months. Police used gentle persuasion to end the protest, and eventually the students dispersed peacefully.
