  • Description

New anti-Government unrest broke out in Leon, 50 miles north-west of Managua, Nicaragua, this week: July 27 a group of women - gathered at the city's cathedral for holy mass in memory of riot victims - clashed with National Guardsmen. Several of the women were injured.

The mass was for seven students of Leon national university killed July 23 when National Guards open fire.

Women, protesting against the deaths, collected outside the cathedral despite the orders of the Guards. When ordered to disperse, the women refused. They harangued, then pushing began. When the Guards finally cleared the cathedral square with rifles several women demonstrators lay on the ground with injuries.

Leon University, long opposed to President Luis Somoza, was closed after the July 23 riots.
