    SOUTH KOREAN TROOPS SERVING IN SOUTH VIETNAM HAVE BEEN MOVED FROM CHU LAI TO QUANG NAM PROVINCE WHERE THEY WILL HELP DEFEND THE VAST AMERICAN BASE AT DANANG. THE 6,000 KOREAN MARINES HAVE BEEN BASED AT CHU LAI, 65 MILES (105 KMS) SOUTH OF DANANG, SINCE THEIR ARRIVAL IN OCTOBER 1966.

    THE CRACK SOUTH KOREAN BRIGADE CLAIMS TO HAVE KILLED 2,259 VIET CONG AND LOST 215 OF THEIR OWN MEN IN THE VIETNAM WAR. THEY HAVE WON A REPUTATION FOR TOUGH FIGHTING.

    BEFORE LEAVING CHU LAI THE KOREANS DESTROYED THEIR POSITIONS AT CHU LAI TO ENSURE THEY WOULD BE OF NO USE TO THE VIET CONG BEFORE EMBARKING IN CHINOOK HELICOPTERS TO MOVE FURTHER NORTH.

    THEIR NEW BASE WILL BE AT HOI AN 20 MILES (32KMS) SOUTH OF DANANG AND SCENE OF SOME OF THE HEAVIEST FIGHTING OF THE WAR. THERE THEY WILL PROVIDE DEFENCE FOR THE VAST AMERICAN BASE.

    75,000 U.S. MARINES HAVE THEIR HEADQUARTERS IN DANANG WHICH IS ALSO A MAJOR BASE FOR GIANT U.S. TRANSPORT AND A TAKE-OFF POINT FOR RAIDS AGAINST NORTH VIETNAM. IT HAS COME UNDER SEVERAL COSTLY ROCKET ATTACKS LAUNCHED BY VIET CONG AND NORTH VIETNAMESE REGULARS FROM THE HILLS OVERTOWERING. THE COASTAL BASE.
