  • Description

Yesterday (31 August) was the last day of "Operation Returnees" by which Arab refugees were allowed to cross the Allenby Bridge over the River Jordan to or from the occupied West Bank. But today, Israeli and Jordanian authorities cooperated in the reunification of two families - the first since the Middle East war - on the bridge. However, there is still a refugee problem in Jordan and the Wadi Dhleil Camp 30 miles (45 kms) from Amman holds about 2,500 homeless people.

The first reunion at Allenby Bridge was between Dr. Ali Mundir, his wife and son - all of whom live in Israel - and his other daughter who came from Kuwait for the meeting. They embraced and talked in the middle of the bridge. An Arab woman who lives in Jerusalem met her husband and son, who had made the trip from Amman. But the reunions were only temporary.

The Jordanian and Israeli authorities are expected to have talks in the near future for the permanent reunification of families.

There is still a refugee problem in Jordan and the Wadi Dhleil Camp holds about 2,500 people in tents. There is a clinic and each person is given one meal a day. At one stage, the camp's population was 11,000 but most of them have been moved to other camps. So far, 97 families have returned to the occupied West Bank of the Jordan.
