  • Description

EXCITED CROWDS GAVE COMMANDER SCOTT CARPENTER A HERO'S WELCOME MAY 27 WHEN HE RETURNED TO CAPE CANAVERAL, U.S.A., FROM GRAND TURK ISLAND, WHERE HE HAD BEEN UNDER MEDICAL EXAMINATION SINCE HIS SPACE FLIGHT MAY 24. ON SHOW AT THE BASE WHEN HE ARRIVES AS "AURORA 7" -THE SPACE CAPSULE HE HAD LAST SEEN IN MID-ATLANTIC. "IT BEHAVED LIKED A JEWEL", HE SAID.

ASTRONAUT CARPENTER'S WIFE AND FAMILY, WHOM HE HAD NOT SEEN SINCE BEFORE THE FLIGHT, WERE THERE TO SEE HIM RECEIVE THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION'S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE NASA, MR. JAMES WEBB.

THE COMMANDER CARPENTER RECOUNTED TO THE PRESS SOME OF THE MOMENTS HE LIVE THROUGH DURING HIS THREE ORBITS OF THE WORLD:
IT HAD BEEN REVEALED BY AMERICAN SPACE OFFICIALS THAT DAY THAT DURING THE FLIGHT COMMANDER CARPENTER FAILED TO SWITCH OFF ONE OF THE CONTROL SYSTEMS BEFORE FIRING THE RETRO ROCKETS THAT BROUGHT HIS CAPSULE. BACK INTO THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. THIS WAS THOUGHT TO EXPLAIN WHY THE FUEL SUPPLY REACHED A DANGEROUSLY LOW LEVEL DURING THE RE-ENTRY STAGE.

BUT THE ERROR WOULD NOT ACCOUNT FOR THE CAPSULE LANDING OVER 200 MILES FARTHER THAN WAS INTENDED. ACCORDING TO AN OFFICIAL THIS WAS DUE PRIMARILY TO THE INCORRECT ANGLE AT WHICH THE CRAFT WAS SET WHEN THE RETRO ROCKETS WERE FIRED.
