Background: The body of President John F. Kennedy was borne through the street of Washington today (November 24th) in a solemn procession from the White House to the U.S. Capitol building -- the familiar dome-topped structure which houses government offices and the chambers of the senate and House of Representative.

His body was carried on an artillery caisson drawn by seven-matched gray horses. Ahead was a riderless black house symbolically carrying a pair of cavalry officers boots reversed in its stirrups.

Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy, President and Mrs. Johnson, and high government officials rode the short distance. High level appointees of the president walked the slow journey which took fifty minutes. The cadance was marked by the steady beat of muffled drums.

Soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen marched in the procession. Several hundred thousand Americans lined the route...many of them had arrived early in the morning and brought chairs and blankets to comfort themselves during the wait this bright chilly day.

Servicemen carried the president's casket to the rotunda of the capitol as a twenty-one gun salute broke the stillness of the sunny day.

The president's casket is resting in the rotunda on a black-shrouded catafalque that had bore the body of Abraham Lincoln, the first American president to be assassinated ninety-eight years ago.

Today ordinary Americans had a chance to walk past the bier. The rotunda will be open through the night and until just before the funeral tomorrow.

Three years ago the newly elected John F. Kennedy rode triumphantly along the same route his cortege took today. Then, the nation cheered him in a ceremony marking his inauguration as its youngest president.
