  • Description

Today, two years and four months after the revolution which brought about the overthrow of the dictator Peron, Argentineans went to the polls to elect a new President.

Thousands lined up under bright summer skies to cast their ballots in the nation's first free election since the Peron regime. Armed soldiers and sailors stood watch over the polling sites but voting proceeded quietly.

Arturo Frondizi, Leftist candidate of the Intransigente Radical party, is the favourite to win the Presidential seat in an election that will select a constitutional government that will replace the provisional regime headed by Major-General Pedro Aramburu.

Frondizi's chief rival is Ricardo Balbin, choice of the Conservative segment of Argentine politics and reportedly the unofficial favourite of the Aramburu administration. Another competitor in the field is Vice-President Rojas, who received a warm reception at the polling station when he arrived to cast his vote.
