Background: The two year old see-sawing battle over skirt lengths showed no sign of abating when leading Italian designers presented their Spring and Summer creations in Rome yesterday (Saturday).

It appears any length is still acceptable, from floor sweeping to barely covering the panties, as long as it was not the conventional mini. Short shorts for streetwear were the only real novelty for Spring fashions. However, Spring and Autumn collections normally echo the trends of the preceding Autumn and Winter, and there was more evolution than revolution.

Hemlines were so uncertain that designer Titti Brugnoli solved the problem by giving one skirt a jagged hem that dipped up and down from knee to mid calf. It was made of diamond shaped patches sewn together of camel, purple and rust wool flannel.

Eleanora Garnett, in some ways the Coco Chanel of Italian fashion for her own designs no matter what the trend, and for her long and consistent years of success and patronage by such clients as the Rockerfeller women, showed a purely romantic and ladylike line of evening gowns in soft floral prints.

One had all the faded appeal of the bygone days of Hollywood's Sunset Strip, which is not to say that it did not look right for today and the revival of forties fashions.
