Background: Monsoonal rains have turned the area around Kirirom in Cambodia into a quagmire as Cambodian and Viet Cong forces prepare for their next action. Fighting in the area shows signs of increasing with the Viet Cong badly damaging a vital bridge on Highway Four.
Highway Four is Cambodia's major road system. Its been the lifeline for troops fighting in forward positions. Large convoys of trucks carrying petrol and food have been stranded as a result of the Viet Cong's action and the supplies are being airlifted into the battle area.
Many of the troops taking part in the operation around Kirirom are having their first taste of battle... and its a tough test to face. Heavy rain has drenched the area for the past week. Tents stand in large deep pools of water and its impossible to remain dry. The rain has brought down the scale of fighting. Only isolated incidents have been reported over the past few days and casualties have been low.
