  • Description

President de Gaulle of France greeted King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola of Belgium on their arrival at Orly Airport, Paris, May 24, for a three-day State visit.

The royal couple arrived in a Caravelle jet-airliner of Air France put at their disposal by the President, their host. In shaking hands, the President addressed the King as "Sire". In the royal suite of 17, was the Belgian Foreign Secretary M. Paul Heuri Spaak, retired NATO Secretary-General.

It was the Belgian royal couple's first State visit abroad since their marriage last December. But since then, Paris was often the centre of shopping visits made privately by the Queen.

The King and his wife, daughter of a Spanish nobleman, the Count de Mora, were staying in the royal suite at the French Foreign Office - occupied by Soviet Premier Khrushchev and his wife during their Paris visit last year.

After the official welcome at the airport, the King and President drove in procession up the Champs-Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe, France's shrine to an unknown soldier - traditionally the first engagement in the round of official engagements of a visiting Chief of State.
