  • Description

Egypt's ambassador to the United Nations walked out of a General Assembly debate on Tuesday (22 November) in protest against criticisms of President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, by Syria's United Nations representative, Mr. Mowaffak Allaf.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Allaf opened the debate on the Middle East with a lengthy attack on President Sadat whose weekend visit to Jerusalem he said, amounted to Egypt's confectio recognition of Israeli annexation of the ??? city. Mr. Allaf accused President Sadat of treacherously stabbing the Egyptian people in the back, in a tragicomic theatre of the absurd. Can this be the same Sadat, asked Mr. Allaf, who was the hero of the Egyptian revolution, and who now plants a kiss on Golda Meir's cheek? At this point, Egyptian Osmate Meguid walked out. He told reporters outside it was not necessary to listen to such insults. Mr. Allaf ignored his departure, and accused President Sadat of shaking hands with war criminals who had assassinated an entire Arab people. Then Saudi Arabian Ambassador Jamil Baroody, spoke.
