    Background: PARIS, FRANCE/ATHENS, GREECE/VARIOUS, IRAN

Protests against the Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini were held in Paris and Athens on June 20. The demonstrations had been called to mark the third anniversary of a declaration of resistance by exiled opposition leader Massoud Rajavi, and June 20 had been named the Day of Martyrs and Political Prisoners. In Paris, students dressed in mock prison clothes, while others carried out mock beatings with clubs. The Paris-based National Council of Resistance, founded in June 1981 by Rajavi and Abolhassan Bani Sadr, Iran's first post-revolutionary president, estimated that about thirty thousand dissidents have been killed and about one hundred thousand imprisoned since Khomeini came to power. In Athens, demonstrators marched to the Iranian embassy to protest about recent killings. Some of the protestors wore masks of the Ayatollah. Meanwhile, in Iran on June 20, thousands of volunteers were mobilised throughout the country. More than four thousand volunteers left Tehran for the Gulf war front, and others left from Mashad and Khoramabad. The volunteers were part of a force mobilised recently for fresh attacks in the 45-month-old conflict. Diplomats in Tehran estimated that there were already five hundred thousand Iranian troops at the warfront, and that the government had not yet decided whether to launch a new offensive.
