    MOST OF THE SHOT PRISONERS WERE VIETNAMESE CIVILIANS. THREE OF THEM WERE WOMEN.

    WHEN THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS ARRIVED, FIVE OF THE SHOT PRISONERS WERE STILL ALIVE, BUT ONE OF THEM DIED SOON AFTER BEING FREED. THE FOUR SURVIVORS WERE FLOWN TO A HOSPITAL.

    THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT STATEMENT ABOUT THE INCIDENT SAID THAT THE SURVIVORS HAD SAID THAT THEY HAD BEEN ARRESTED - SOME AS FAR AS SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR - FOR FAILING TO PAY VIET CONG TAXES IN MONEY OR RICE.
