    U.S.nuclear submarine Thresher type vessel Permit carrying a crew of 95, captained by Commander D.Boyd on the morning of August 24 at Sasebo port, near Nagasaki, Kyushu Island.It's the first Thresher Type sub-marine to visit Japan, the three previous visits being those of the Skate-type Seadragon which visited Sasebo last Nov.12 and February 2 and Skip jack type Snook which came to the same port May 25.The Permit will be bethered at buoy No.1 of Sasebo Port during its five-day visit to Japan.The Permit ??? was put in to service on May 29, 1962.It is the same type as Thresher, which sank off the U.S.East coast during test drive on April 10, 1963.It measures 84.94 meters in length, 9.7 meters in width and 7.7 meters in draft.It is capable of making 20 knots on the water and 35 knots under water.It can sail 60,000 miles without refuelling.The Thresher-type craft are normally equipped with missiles with atomic warheads.Although the Permit does not carry Subroc missiles during its coming visit to Japan.However, Japanese Socialist Party and Communist Party in association with labour union members assembled at the pier of Sasebo Port from various parts of Kyushu Islands and advocated "Don't U.S.N-submarine coming into Japanese port" and U.S.stay away from Vietnam" "Don't Japanese port be U.S.naval base" Don't involve Japan in the Vietnam War letting her port to be used by American".Few hundred demonstrators shouted when the submarine entered the port.
