    THE VIOLENCE REACHED A PEAK LAST SATURDAY (31 MAY) NIGHT WHEN A GANG OF NEGRO TEEN-AGERS TERRORIZED SCORES OF PASSENGERS ON A LATE-NIGHT TRAIN. THAT SAME NIGHT A SCHOOL TEACHER WAS STABBED TO DEATH IN AN APARTMENT ELEVATOR AND THE WAVE OF CRIME CONTINUED DESPITE GREAT PUBLIC OUTCRY FOR MORE PROTECTION.

    FIVE HUNDRED EXTRA POLICE WERE PUT ON BY THE CITY AND THE TRANSIT AUTHORITY PUT 200 MORE ON THE SUBWAY BEATS. IN ADDITION, TWENTY THOUSAND CITY POLICE AND ONE THOUSAND TRANSIT AUTHORITY POLICE WERE PUT ON OVERTIME FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD.
