    THE TANK BATTLE IS BEING WAGED OVER A 100-SQUARE-MILE (206 SQUARE-KILOMETRES) CHEQUERBOARD OF LUSH CROPLAND NORTH OF LAHORE.MOST OF THE ACTION TAKES PLACE AT DAWN AND DUSK -- FOR THE HEAT OF NOON DRIVES EVEN THE HARDY SOLDIERS AWAY FROM THE FRONT.

    REPORTS ON THE BATTLE ARE CONFLICTING.A PAKISTAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE ON THURSDAY SAID THAT PAKISTAN ARTILLERY HAD DESTROYED 61 TANKS IN 24 HOURS.THIRTY-SIX OF THESE, SAID THE COMMUNIQUE, WERE IN THE SIALKOT AREA.THE STATEMENT SAID THAT SEVERAL HUNDRED INDIAN INFANTRYMEN WERE KILLED DURING THE SAME PERIOD.MORALE REMAINS HIGH ON THE PAKISTAN SIDE.ONE STAFF OFFICER SAID: "THE INDIANS HAVE SUFFERED SUCH A BLOODY NOSE HERE IN THE PAST SIX DAYS THEY DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO NOW."
    BUT INDIAN REPORTS SUGGEST THEY TOO HAVE HAD CONSIDERABLE SUCCESS.THEY SAY THEY HAVE DESTROYED ABOUT 70 PAKISTANI TANKS DURING THE PAST THREE DAYS.ON THE DAY THIS FILM WAS SHOT ALL-INDIA RADIO REPORTED THAT PAKISTANI TROOPS WERE "ON THE RUN" -- AFTER BEING DEFEATED IN A TANK BATTLE IN THE SIALKOT AREA.

    WHILE THE TANKS CONTINUE FIGHTING ONE ANOTHER, GROUND ARTILLERY IS ALSO IN USE -- OVER RANGES OF BETWEEN EIGHT AND TWELVE MILES.PAKISTAN GUNNERS SAID THEIR TARGETS WERE INDIAN TROOP CONCENTRATIONS -- AND ENEMY TANKS.
