    THE FIRST CONGRESS OF THE GHANA MOSLEM COMMUNITY WAS OPENED AT THE CENTRAL MOSQUE IN KUMASI LAST MONDAY. MORE THAN SEVEN HUNDRED DELEGATES, REPRESENTING TWO HUNDRED BRANCHES IN THE COUNTRY, ATTENDED THE CONFERENCE. AMONG THOSE PRESENT WERE THE DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, MR. B.A. YAKUBU, THE COMMISSIONER FOR WORKS AND HOUSING, MR. ASIFU ALI, AND THE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN OF THE MOSLEM COMMUNITY, MR. ALHAJI WAHE KADIRI ENGLISH.

    MR. YAKUBU, IN HIS SPEECH TO THE CONGRESS, NOTED THAT THE MOSLEM COMMUNITY SHOULD CONFINE ITSELF MORE TO RELIGION THAN TO POLITICS. HE SAID MOSLEM SHOULD REFRAIN FROM INTERFERRING IN OTHER PEOPLE'S AFFAIRS. MR. ENGLISH SAID THAT THE OCCASION WAS A GREAT ONE BECAUSE NEVER BEFORE IN THE HISTORY OF THE ISLAMIC RELIGION HAD SUCH A GATHERING OF ALL MOSLEMS FROM THE EIGHT REGIONS OF GHANA TAKEN PLACE. SPEAKING ON FUTURE PLANS, MR. ENGLISH SAID THERE WERE PLANS TO ERECT AN ARABIC AND ENGLISH SECONDARY SCHOOL AND A DAY NURSERY IN ACCRA. HE SAID THAT A NEW MOSQUE, CATERING FOR 14-THOUSAND PEOPLE, MAY ALSO BE BUILT IN THE CAPITAL. MR. ALI TOLD THE CONGRESS IT WAS TIME THAT MOSLEMS STOPPED PAYING LIP SERVICE TO THEIR RELIGION AND RE-EXAMINE THEMSELVES AND TO TAKE STOCK TO THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS.
