  • Description

President Leopold Senghor of Senegal demanded a return to what he called "true" teaching when he spoke at the annual prize giving for high school students in Dakar recently.

The President said "true" teaching meant learning to read and write correctly and express oneself precisely. He told the students and guests who included several foreign diplomats that he had been appalled by the lazy French he had heard and read i many speeches, books and letters since Senegal become independent -- but he was not too surprised because lax word usage was becoming increasingly common in France as well.

President Senghor said teachers must take most of the blame because they were letting their students read famous literature and comment ont it before they had properly learnt basic French grammar. The President recommended that students should continue to learn grammar until they were at least fifteen-years-old.

The whole Senegalese government attended the prize giving in Dakar's Daniel Sorano National Theatre.
