  • Description

Greece honoured the memory of Lord Byron, the English poet, at a special "Te Deum" service in Messolonghi Cathedral, Apl 2. Lord Byron died at Messolonghi - at the age of 36 - during the seige of the city by the Turks in Apl, 1824. He is now buried in England - his heart, however, remains at Messolonghi.

The service was attended by Prince Peter (representing King Paul) and political, church, state and service officials. Evzones carried the symbolic "kolyva" - boiled wheat offered at memorial services.

Prince Peter laid a wreath on Lord Byron's statue ... and other wreaths were laid in memory of the 10,000 men, women and children that got away from the besieged city on the night of Apl 11/12, 1826. Lord Byron went to Greece to help in the liberation of the country.
