  • Description

PRINCE NORODOM SIHANOUK OF CAMBODIA ANNOUNCED THIS WEEKEND - AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS COUNTRY'S INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS - THAT TWO CAMBODIANS HAD BEEN KILLED AND ONE WOUNDED BY AMERICAN RAIDS ON VILLAGES NEAR THE CAMBODIAN-SOUTH VIETNAMESE BORDER DURING THE WEEK. THE PRINCE - CONCERNED AT RECENT CASUALTIES - HAS ASKED FOR AN ASSURANCE FROM PRESIDENT JOHNSON THAT HE WILL CEASE BOMBING ACTIVITIES ON THE CAMBODIAN BORDER.

THE BORDER POST ON THE CAMBODIA-SOUTH VIETNAMESE BORDER AT BAVET IS BULLET-SCARRED AND POCK-MARKED FROM BOMB SHELL FRAGMENTS UNLEASHED DURING RAIDS BY UNITED STATES AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE AIRCRAFT ON THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE SIDE OF THE BORDER.

PLUME OF SMOKE RISE REGULARLY ONLY A FEW HUNDRED YARDS (METRES) FROM THE BORDER POST. CAMBODIAN OFFICIALS FREQUENTLY WATCH AMERICAN HELICOPTER GUNSHIPS CARRYING OUT RAIDS ON PEASANT COMMUNITIES ON THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE SIDE OF THE BORDER.

PRINCE SIHANOUK ORDERED THE IMPRISONMENT OF 11 AMERICANS AND ONE SOUTH VIETNAMESE AFTER THEIR SHIP HAD STRAYED INTO CAMBODIAN TERRITORIAL WATERS LAST JULY. HE HAS OFFERED TO RELEASE THE MEN IF THE AMERICANS CALL A HALT TO FIGHTING IN BORDER AREAS.

THE BORDER POST AT BAVET IS ONLY ABOUT 50 MILES (80 KMS.) FROM SAIGON, AND PEOPLE PASS FREELY BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. IN THE MARKETS OF BAVET U.S. ARMY FOOD RATIONS, GOVERNMENT EQUIPMENT AND CONSUMER GOODS ARE AVAILABLE FOR SALE.
