    FOURTEEN VESSELS TODAY (SUNDAY) CROSSED THE STARTING LINE AT PLYMOUTH ON THE FIRST LEG OF THE SAIL TRAINING ASSOCIATION'S 1964 INTERNATIONAL "TALL SHIPS" RACE FROM PLYMOUTH TO LISBON TO BERMUDA.

    BIGGEST CRAFT AMONGST THE STARTERS ON THE FIRST STAGE WERE TWO FRENCH TOPSOIL SCHOONERS, LA BELLE POULE AND L'ETOILE, EACH OF 215 TONS, WHILE THE BIGGEST BRITISH ENTRY WAS THE SAIL TRAINING ASSOCIATION'S 52 TON YAWL, TAWAU.

    THE FIRST LEG OF THE RACE COVERS 760 MILES FROM THE START LINE OF DRAKE'S ISLAND TO THE FINISH OFF THE SANTA MARTA LIGHTHOUSE AT CASCAIS.

    THE SECOND LEG OF THE RACE FROM LISBON TO BERMUDA STARTS ON JUNE 5. THERE ARE ALSO FOURTEEN ENTRIES, BUT INCLUDE FEW OF THE YACHTS WHO'LL BE TAKING PART IN THE PLYMOUTH TO LISBON STAGE.

    THE TRANS-ATLANTIC ENTRIES INCLUDE THE GERMAN TRAINING SHIP, PETER VON DANZIG WITH FULL-RIGGED SHIPS FROM SPAIN, DENMARK AND THE ARGENTINE, GIVING TRUE FLAVOUR TO THE "TALL SHIPS" RACE.

    FROM BERMUDA THE TWO FRENCH SCHOONERS IN COMPANY WITH THE DANISH, SPANISH AND ARGENTINE VESSELS WILL SAID TO NEW YORK FOR A TRIUMPHAL ENTRY INTO THE PORT IN A SALUTE TO THE WORLD'S FAIR.
