Almost 4,000 insurgents who took part in Ceylon's bloody uprising that erupted a month ago are reported by the government to have surrendered during the government's four-day amnesty. The rebels who gave themselves up by the end of the amnesty on May 4 are being held in a rehabilitation centre at the Vidyodaya University in Gangodawila. Another 4,000 rebels captured by government forces are also being held in rehabilitation centres.

SYNOPSIS: Vidyodaya University where the Ceylonese rebels who gave themselves up during the government's four day amnesty are being held for rehabilitation. The rebels are mainly young men and women who started an uprising last month to hasten by revolutionary means long-awaited social reforms. About 4,000 are reported by the Ceylon government to have surrendered during the amnesty, which ran out last Tuesday. Another 4,000 rebels who've been captured by government forces are being held in other rehabilitation centres.

The amnesty to the young left-wingers offered by the Prime Minister, Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, has preceded a determined effort to end the violence. Ceylon's security forces have started an all-out offensive against insurgent hideouts in the country. The Home Affairs Minister, Felix Dias-Bandaranaike, said on Tuesday the government would have the country under control by the end of the month.
