Exploratory talks on the Cyprus question began in Athens today between Britain and Greece. Mr Selwyn Lloyd, Foreign Secretary, and Mr Averoff, the Greek Foreign Minister, had two two-hour meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was later reported that no proposals had been made by either side.
In today's talks Mr Lloyd was assisted by Sir Hugh Foot, the Governor of Cyprus, Sir Roger Allem, the British Ambassador in Athens, and two senior Foreign Office officials. On the Greek side were Mr Averoff, Mr Seferiades, the Greek Ambassador to Britain, and three officials.
It is now clear that Mr Lloyd has come to Athens to sound the flexibility of the Greek Government's Cyprus policy.
