  • Description

PEKING'S ANNOUNCEMENT YESTERDAY (MONDAY) THAT PANDAS ARE TO BE FOUND ELSEWHERE THAN IN THE BAMBOO GROVES OF SZECHWAN PROVINCE COULD MEAN THE ALLEVIATION OF THE WORLD PANDA SHORTAGE. PEKING'S ZOO HAS ACQUIRED FOUR NEW PANDAS, NOT FROM SZECHWAN PROVINCE -- HITHERTO THOUGHT TO BE THE ONLY SOURCE -- BUT FROM THE TIBETAN HIMALAYAS. THERE ARE ONLY ABOUT A DOZEN PANDAS IN ZOOS AROUND THE WORLD, MOSTLY IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

PEKING SAYS THE FOUR PANDAS -- FIRST TO BE TRAPPED IN THE HIMALAYAS -- ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE WHICH COME FROM THE BAMBOO GROVES ON THE HIGH MOUNTAIN OF SZECHWAN. HOWEVER THE QUARTET OF NEW ARRIVALS ARE MORE SKILFUL WITH THEIR FOREPAWS AND CAN HOLD BAMBOO SHOOTS AND BISCUITS TO EAT THEM IN THE SAME WAS AS A SQUIRREL.

PANDAS WITH THEIR CUDDLY APPEARANCE ARE IMMENSELY POPULAR WITH ZOO VISITORS, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE NOT ALWAYS AS AMIABLE AS THEY LOOK. ONCE CARNIVOROUS, PANDAS HAVE BECOME VEGETARIAN OVER THE AGES AND HAVE EVOLVED GRINDING TEETH FOR THEIR CHANGED DIET.
