SYNOPSIS: Senator George McGovern and his wife returned to Washington on Wednesday, to face the aftermath of his landslide election defeat by the incumbent President, Richard Nixon. Accompanying them was Sargent Shriver, the man the Democrats had hoped would join McGovern in the White House as Vice-President. Despite his defeat, Senator McGovern felt there was still plenty of life left in the Democratic party machine.

After talks with the press, and with the supporters who crowed around to offer sympathy and support, Senator McGovern made off to Democratic party headquarters for discussion about the election outcome.

Senator Edward Kennedy, who arrived shortly afterwards, was equally optimistic about the future.
