  • Description

A LANDSLIDE CAUSED BY DAYS OF TORRENTIAL RAIN IN THREATENING A SERIOUS FLOOD IN THE TYROLEAN THIERSEE VALLEY, NORTH-EAST OF INNSBRUCK. THOUSANDS OF TONS OF EARTH AND ROCK CRASHED INTO THE THIERSEE RIVER YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) FORMING A DAM AGAINST WHICH THE RIVER'S WATERS ARE BACKING UP DANGEROUSLY.

THE LANDSLIDE DAMAGED NINE HOUSE AND BURIED TWO OTHERS IN THE VILLAGE OF LANDL. NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT ABOUT SIX HUNDRED PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA FLED THEIR HOMES AS FEARS OF A MAJOR FLOOD IN THE VALLEY MOUNTED.

IN THE MEANTIME, HUNDREDS OF AUSTRIAN ARMY MEN SUPPORTED BY CIVILIAN VOLUNTEERS ARE RACING AGAINST TIME TO DIG A CHANNEL THROUGH THE LANDSLIDE TO ALLOW THE RIVER TO RESUME ITS NATURAL COURSE. THE WORKERS WERE AIDED TODAY BY A RESPITE IN THE RAIN, BUT FURTHER RAIN HAS BEEN FORECAST.

ATTEMPTS TO USE EXPLOSIVE TO BLAST A GAP IN THE ROCKFALL HAVE HAD TO BE ABANDONED AS THE BLAST COULD CAUSE ANOTHER LANDSLIDE. UNLESS THE CHANNEL IS DUG QUICKLY, THE DAMMED UP WATER COULD FLOOD MOST OF THE VALLEY.
