  • Description

The Vietnamese Ambassador to Moscow, Nguyen Huu Khieu, was the guest of honour at the opening session in Moscow on Friday (28 September) of the Soviet Committee of Support for Vietnam.

SYNOPSIS: the session was opened by the Chairman of the Committee and Secretary of Soviet Trade Unions Pyotr Pimenov. The Vietnamese Ambassador sat on his left as Mr. Pimenov told the delegates that Vietnam is being made an objective of blackmail and pressure by China because it is pursuing independent policies.

He stressed the Soviet public's indignation at the encroachment made by the Peking government upon Vietnam's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and demanded that this provocation be stopped immediately.

Relations between China and Vietnam have deteriorated steadily this year with several border violations in which each side has claimed that the other had attacked.

Mr. Khieu said how grateful his people are to the Soviet public for their support of the just cause of Vietnam. He underlined that Vietnam is fully resolved to solve all disputed questions with China amicably. This would indicate that despite reports of military build-up along the borders between the two countries, the Vietnamese, for the moment, prefer to stick to a war of words.

Mikhail Vetrov, a member of the Vietnam Support Committee, then read out the text of a telegram which the Committee have forwarded to the Vietnam's Patriotic Front. The Committee pledged their solidarity and support and strongly censured Peking's policies towards Vietnam. They expressed confidence that the people will succeed in protecting their socialist gains. One of the problems which has to be solved is the status of the Chinese community in Vietnam. More than 160,000 people of Chinese origin have already fled back to China.
