    THE LIBERATION COMMITTEE OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (O.A.U.) HELD A MEETING ON TUESDAY IN DAR-ES-SALAAM TO TRY TO RECONCILE FEUDING FACTIONS WITHIN THE PAN AFRICANIST CONGRESS (P.A.C.) THE PAC IS ONE OF SOUTH AFRICA'S TWO BANNED AFRICAN NATIONAL LIBERATION ORGANISATIONS.

    THE PAC SPLIT LAST JUNE INTO TWO FACTIONS LED RESPECTIVELY BY THE PAC'S ACTING PRESIDENT, MR POTLAKO LEBALLO, AND BY MR. T.T. LETLAKA, THE PAC'S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBER WHO CLAIMS TO HAVE DEPOSED HIM. PENDING A SETTLEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO FACTIONS, ALL HELP FROM THE OAU TO THE PAC HAS BEEN CUT OFF. THE ORGANISATION HAS ALSO BEEN BANNED IN ZAMBIA, WHERE IT HAD ITS EXTERNAL HEADQUARTERS AND LESOTHO, NOMINAL SEAT OF ITS HOME HEADQUARTERS. THE PRESIDENT OF THE PAC, MR ROBERT SOBUKWE, IS DETAINED ON SOUTH AFRICA'S ROBBEN ISLAND, A PRISON ISLAND OFF CAPETOWN.

    IN SPITE OF THE LEADERSHIP SPLIT, THE LIBERATION COMMITTEE CONSIDERS THE PAC AN EFFECTIVE FORCE WITHIN SOUTH AFRICAN AND DOES NOT WISH TO WITHDREW RECOGNITION. AT THE MEETING WERE PRESENT MR GEORGE MAGOMBE, EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF THE OAU LIBERATION COMMITTEE, MR LEBALLO AND MR LETLAKA WERE ALSO PRESENT.

    (THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS IS THE RIVAL ORGANISATION OF THE PAC, IT WAS FOUNDED IN 1912, AND THE PAC SPLIT OFF FROM IT IN 1958. IN MARCH 1960, THE PAC CALLED AN ANTI-GOVERNMENT CAMPAIGN WHICH RESULTED IN THE SHARPEVILLE SHOOTING IN WHICH 60 PEOPLE WERE KILLED, THE SUBSEQUENT STATE OF EMERGENCY IN SOUTH AFRICA, AND THE BAN ON BOTH ORGANISATIONS.)
