  • Description

Soccer...and Yugoslavia beat Cyprus three-nil on Sunday (1 April) in their Group Three qualifying match of the European Championship. In his first international match, Yugoslav striker Vucovic scored two goals.

SYNOPSIS: Yugoslavia sorely needed to win by a big margin here against the weakest team in the group. They had lost their previous games to leader Spain, and Rumania, and needed plenty of goals to stay in the competition. An early move looked promising, but broke down with the shot for goal.

Not surprisingly, Yugoslavia had most of the play. Yet, they could not get their game going -- a fate many superior teams have often suffered against poor opposition.

Cyprus had not scored in their previous group match, against Spain, who beat them five-nil. In this half, their occasional forays downfield but a forlorn air about them.

Five minutes before half-time, Vucovic scored his first goal. Yugoslavia swept down the left flank, and their captain Surjack supplied the pass for the young striker to put them ahead.

In the second half, Yugoslavia strove to build on their first goal, but were frustrated for a long time.

It took until the seventy-eight minute before Vucovic scored his second...and it was a beauty. He took on, and beat, two defenders before glancing the ball in off an upright. This was a debut to remember.

It said a lot for the spirit of the Cyprus players, that they turned on their best football when trailing by two goals.

But they were completely sunk when Miamiliotis handled close to goal -- a penalty. Surjack hits home the penalty. This put Yugoslavia in to second place on the ladder on goal averages from Rumania have another game to play.
