Background: LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Edwin Moses of the United States won his second Olympic championship on August 5 in the men's 400 metres hurdles in Los Angeles. His winning time was 47.75 seconds, just short of the Olympic record of 47.64 he set eight years ago in Montreal. Danny Harris, 18, of the US took second place in 48.13 seconds, with Harald Schmid of West Germany, the last person to beat Moses, in August 1977 third in 48.19 seconds.

Finland's left-handed athlete, Arto Haerkonen won the men's javelin gold medal, with a throw of 86.76 metres, the worst winning throw since 1964 when fellow Finn Paul Nevala won with 82.66 metres. The event sadly missed the boycotting eastern bloc nations. East German Vive Hom's world record stands at 104.8 metres. Britain's David Ottley took the silver with 85.74 metres.

The United States' Evelyn Ashford sped to victory in the women's 100 metres in a time of 10.97 seconds, breaking the Olympic record of 11.01 set by Annegret Richter of West Germany in 1976. Alice Brown of the USA took second place in 11.l3 seconds.

Reigning Olympic champion, Steve Ovett of Britain only just qualified for the final of the men's 800 metres. He fell over the finishing line just ahead of Omar Khalifa of Sudan for the fourth place in the final, with only six hundredths of a second separating the two runners. Ovett clocked a time on one minute, 44.81 seconds.

On the same day, Italy gained the last cycling gold medal of the games, winning the 100 kilometre road race in Olympic-record time, one hour, 58 minutes, 28 seconds. The team comprised Marcello Bartalini, Marco Giovannetti, Eros Poli and Claudio Vandelli. Switzerland were second in two hours, 2.38 minutes, with the USA third in two hours, 2.46 minutes.

In the weightlifting, Romanian army officer Nicu Vlad broke three Olympic records en route to his country's second straight gold medal, winning the 90 kilogram class. Vlad snatched 172.5 kgs for one record, cleaned and jerked 220 kgs for the second, and the total of 392.5 kgs made the third record.

In the Gymnastics hall, Romanian Ecaterina Szabo won the gold medal in the vault and the floor exercises and shared the individual title on the balance beam with her 14-year old compatriot, Simone Pauca, Szabo scored a perfect ten on the floor, and equalled Pauca's total of 19.8000 on the beam.
