  • Description

AN AMERICAN D.C.B. FOUR-ENGINED JET AIRLINER, WITH 58 PEOPLE ON BOARD, CRASHED INTO A LAKE SHORTLY AFTER TAKING OFF FROM NEW ORLEANS EARLY YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) ON A FLIGHT FROM MEXICO CITY TO NEW YORK. NO SURVIVORS HAVE BEEN FOUND.

THE AIRCRAFT WAS GAINING HEIGHT SHORTLY AFTER TAKE-OFF WHEN IT SUDDENLY VANISHED FROM THE AIRPORT RADAR SCREENS.

LATER COASTGUARD HELICOPTERS FOUND WRECKAGE IN LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN, 30 MILES (48 KILOMETRES) WIDE, WHICH LIES JUST NORTH OF NEW ORLEANS. DEBRIS WAS SPREAD OVER A WIDE AREA, SHOWING THAT THE PLANE HAD PROBABLY EXPLODED, EITHER IN THE AIR, OR ON IMPACT WITH THE WATER.

THERE WAS NO SIGN OF ANY SURVIVORS AMONG THE 51 PASSENGERS AND SEVEN CREW MEMBERS ON BOARD. BODIES AND PERSONAL DOCUMENTS WERE LATER RECOVERED FROM THE LAKE.

COASTGUARDS HAVE ALSO RECOVERED A NUMBER OF AIRCRAFT PARTS, INCLUDING SEATS, COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT AND SOUND PROOFING. BUT NOTHING FOUND SO FAR HAS SHOWN ANY OBVIOUS CAUSE FOR THE DISASTER.

AT THE TIME THE AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF FROM NEW ORLEANS VISIBILITY WAS GOOD. THERE WERE NO STRONG WINDS BUT THERE WAS SLIGHT RAIN FALLING IN THE AREA.
