INTRODUCTION: Gabon's President Omer Bongo is currently enjoying his annual winter holiday with his family on the slopes of the French Alps.

SYNOPSIS: President Bongo is staying at Isola 2000, a station some 62 miles (100 kilometres) north of Nice in the Southern Alps.

The Gabonese leader is an experienced and able skier. He spends a week each winter at a ski resort with his family and a party of friends and officials, which this year numbers 20.

The Isola station is one of his favourite areas. The resort is said to be one of the most modern in Europe and features spectacular mountain scenery.

But for President Bongo the joy is in skiing itself. Racing down the slopes -- far from the worries of his office. The President has been quoted as saying that skiing is his greatest form of relaxation.

However, the holiday will soon be over and it will be back to the normal routine of government. President Bongo is due to resume official duties on Friday (25 February) in Paris where he'll hold talks with French President Giscard.
