  • Description

The oil exploration ship which put Greece and Turkey onto a way footing and sparked a crisis that reached the United Nations, has returned home. The Sismik One docked in Izmir, Turkey to a hero's welcome.

SYNOPSIS: The Sismik One returned to Izmir on Saturday (25 September), after two months of searching for oil in the Aegean. The incident caused Greece, which claims the sea is its own territory, to put its navy, army and air force on full alert. The Sismik One, under Turkish naval protection, was shadowed by Greek warships, while troops from both sides were moved to the two nations' common border.

The reception demonstrated the intense patriotic pride that the ship's mission has aroused in Turks. Both Turkey and Greece are laying claim to mineral rights of the Aegean seabed. The United Nations Security Council called on the two countries to open negotiations on the dispute, and on Monday (27 September) the Greek and Turkish Foreign Ministers met at U.N. headquarters in New York.

Sismik One was back in port, according to the Turkish government, because it had finished its work for the year.
