Background: INTRODUCTION: The West German Foreign Minister, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, has met with his counterpart in Rome to discuss progress made in his recent talks in Pakistan and Egypt. The meeting, held on Thursday (19 February) with the Italian Foreign Minister Emilio Colombo, was described by Herr Genscher as being 'completely successful'.
SYNOPSIS: The two Foreign Ministers met at the Villa Madama..near Rome.
Herr Genscher had agreed to this meeting before he left Bonn on February the 15th for Pakistan and Egypt. The purpose of his trip was to find out what role West Germany could play in providing political stability in the highly-sensitive area of South West Asia. His talks with Signor Colombo, while exploring this topic thoroughly, concentrated more on talks held in Germany before the trip .. in which the West German government discussed an undisclosed topic with the Foreign Ministers of Britain and France. Herr Genscher later said that he and Signor Colombo were in complete agreement. He said it had been agreed that Italy and Germany should work closely to preserve the unity of the Western Alliance. Herr Genscher is scheduled to meet with the new United States Secretary of State, Alexander Haig, in March. Their talks will provide a preliminary for a meeting the following month between President Reagan and West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt.
