  • Description

TWENTY YOUNG CHRISTIANS FROM MORE THAN TEN COUNTRIES ARE IN BALI, AN INDONESIAN ISLAND, WORKING ON A PROJECT TO ESTABLISH NEW MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD FOR PEOPLE LEFT DESTITUTE BY LAST YEAR'S VOLCANO DISASTER.

THE CHRISTIAN VOLUNTEERS COME FROM EUROPE, THE AMERICAS, FROM GHANA, INDIA, THE PHILIPPINES AND JAPAN. THEY ARE SPENDING TEN MONTHS IN BALI, LIVING AND WORKING WITH INDONESIAN CHRISTIANS. MOST OF THEM ARE PAYING THEIR OWN WAY OR GETTING SOME HELP FROM THEIR HOME CHURCHES. THEIR CO-LEADER IS AN AUSTRALIAN, THE REVEREND COLVILLE CROWE, WHO FOR SIX YEARS WAS A MISSIONARY IN TIMOR, AND WHO SPEAKS THE INDONESIAN LANGUAGE.

DURING THIS PERIOD, THE TEAM WILL SET UP FIVE SEPARATE SCHEMES TO STIMULATE PIG, FROG, AND FISH BREEDING, WOODWORKING AND BAMBOO CRAFTS. THEY WILL ALSO BUILD A LIME FACTORY.

ORGANISED BY THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES, THE TEN-MONTH PROJECT IS THE THIRD LONG-TERM CAMP. MORE THAN TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS HAVE ALREADY BEEN SPENT UNDER THE COUNCIL'S INTER-CHURCH AID PROGRAMME IN BUYING EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS.

THE FIRST WORK OF THE TEAM, WHICH BEGAN RECENTLY AT ABIANBASE, NORTH OF THE BALINESE CAPITAL OF DEN PASAR, IS TO BUILD A PIG BREEDING FARM. NEW BREEDING STOCK TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE INBRED BALINESE PIG IS EXPECTED TO BE BROUGHT FROM AUSTRALIA.

THE FIVE PROJECTS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE ISLAND ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE AN AVERAGE OF TWO MONTHS EACH, AND THE WORK CAMP WILL BREAK UP AT THE END OF JUNE NEXT YEAR. THE YOUNG VOLUNTEERS, AGED BETWEEN 19 AND 30, WILL ALSO TAKE PART IN THE RELIGIOUS AND SOCIAL WORK OF CHRISTIAN CHURCHES IN BALI.

MORE THAN FIVE THOUSAND REFUGEES OF LAST YEAR'S DISASTER STILL REMAIN IN TEMPORARY CAMPS AWAITING PERMANENT RESETTLEMENT; AND THE WORK BEING DONE BY THE YOUNG VOLUNTEERS WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR MANY OF THESE PEOPLE TO BUILD A NEW LIFE IN BALI, WITHOUT HAVING TO BE TRANSMIGRATED TO OTHER PARTS OF INDONESIA.
