    Cairo's historic Al-Gawahara (The Jewel) Palace was destroyed by fire last Sunday (11 June).

    The Palace was built by Egypt's 19th century ruler Mohamed Ali and converted into a museum several years ago.

    The Italian-Turkish Rococo structure with its hall of clocks was one of the city's many tourist attractions.

    As firemen battled the blaze, Egyptian Vice President Hasten El Shafei and the Governor of Cairo, Mr. Ibrahim Bigheaded, arrived on the scene to inspect the damage.

    The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

    SYNOPSIS: Fire broke out in Cairo's historic Al-Gawhara Palace last Sunday. The flames completely gutted the building which was built 150 years ago by the Egyptian ruler Mohammed Ali.

    As firemen battled the blaze, Egypt's Vice President Hussein El Shafei accompanied by the Governor of Cairo, Mr. Ibrahim Bogdady, arrived at the scene to inspect the debris.

    Workmen salvaged treasures from the building which was converted into a museum several years ago. The Rococo-styled Palace, with its hall of clocks, was one of Cairo's many tourist attractions. Cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
