  • Description

GREENLAND, THE LEGENDARY HOME OF FATHER CHRISTMAS, AND ONE OF THE NEAREST COUNTRIES TO THE STRATEGICALLY VITAL NORTH POLE, HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT LICK IN THE CHAIN OF AIR BASES AND WEATHER STATIONS THAT MAKE UP THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION. PART OF THE TASK OF PATROLLING THE FROZEN WASTELANDS - ONLY ABOUT AN EIGHTH OF THE COUNTRY'S 840,000 SQUARE MILES IS FREE FROM ICE - IS CARRIED OUT ON LAND BY DOG-SLEDGE TEAMS OF THE DANISH ARMY.

THE TEAMS - VOLUNTEER SOLDIERS AND HUSKY DOGS - ARE TAKEN ABOARD DANISH AIR FORCE TRANSPORT PLANES AT THE SMALL TOWN OF MESTERSVIG FOR A JOURNEY OF SOME THOUSAND MILES TO STATION NORTH, THE NORTHERNMOST POINT IN GREENLAND. FROM THERE THE DOG-SLEDGE PATROLS BEGIN THE LONELY AND OFTEN HAZARDOUS TREK BACK TO MESTERVIG.

PROGRESS ACROSS THE VAST ICE AND SNOW FIELDS DEPENDS ON THE WEATHER. BUT THESE SPECIALIST SOLDIERS AND THEIR DOGS EXPECT TO BE AWAY FOR MONTHS AT A TIME. AS TOUGH AS THE TEAMS HAVE TO BE, EACH SLEDGE CARRIES PROVISIONS TO ENABLE THEM TO EXIST FOR AT LEAST DOUBLE THE TIME SCHEDULED FOR THEIR PATROL.
