Background: President Ayub Khan of Pakistan arrived in Tokyo, Dec 12, for an eight-day State visit to Japan. He had earlier visited Burma, Indonesia and the Philippines on his Asian tour.
The President was met at Tokyo airport by Emperor of Japan; Prince Takamatsu, the brother of the Emperor, other members of the Royal family and cabinet ministers headed by Premier Hayato Ikeda.
The following day, escorted by royal guards, and accompanied by Prince Takamatsu, President Ayub Khan drove in state in the royal carriage to the Imperial Palace to call on the Emperor.
Later, he received the "key to Tokyo" from Governor Lyotaro Azuma, and delivered a message of friendship to the Japanese people in a nationwide radio and television broadcast.
The President was also given an honorary doctor's degree in literature by Nihon University for his efforts to foster closer cultural ties between his country and Japan.
