  • Description

MORE THAN ONE THOUSAND DOCTORS IN BELGIUM'S ARMED FORCES RESERVE HAD REPORTED TO MILITARY UNITS BY TONIGHT (SUNDAY) AFTER A GOVERNMENT CALL-UP AIMED AT MAINTAINING AT LEAST EMERGENCY SERVICES IN THE CURRENT MEDICAL STRIKE.

CIVILIAN DOCTORS AT PRESENT WORKING IN THE EMERGENCY SERVICES AT PUBLIC AND PRIVATE HOSPITALS WERE ALSO ANSWERING A GOVERNMENT "REQUISITION" ORDERING THEM TO REMAIN AT THEIR POSTS OR FACE LEGAL ACTION.

THESE MEASURES, ON THE 12TH DAY OF THE DOCTORS' STRIKE AGAINST GOVERNMENT HEALTH SERVICES PLANS, WERE ANNOUNCED TODAY AFTER AN EMERGENCY DAWN MEETING AND 13 HOURS OF ABORTIVE NEGOTIATIONS DURING THE NIGHT.

THERE ARE 3,600 DOCTORS IN THE MILITARY RESERVE, AND THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN THREE DAYS TO DON THEIR UNIFORMS AND REPORT TO THEIR UNITS FOR ASSIGNMENTS TO HOSPITALS. ANY OF THOSE WHO ARE ON THE MILITARY RESERVE AND DO NOT RETURN WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE CONSIDERED DESERTERS.

MORE THAN 5,000 BELGIAN DOCTORS HAVE CROSSED INTO NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE STRIKE TO AVOID POSSIBLE REQUISITION. HOWEVER IF THEY ARE ON THE MILITARY RESERVE, UNDER THE RULES OF NATO, THEY ARE LIABLE TO EXTRADITION.
