  • Description

REMARKABLE FILM WAS RELEASED TODAY (TUESDAY) OF U.S. ASTRONAUT EDWARD WHITE'S WALK IN SPACE LAST THURSDAY. IT WAS SHOT BY AN AUTOMATIC CAMERA WHICH WHITE ATTACHED TO THE SPACECRAFT BEFORE HE STEPPED OUT. THE FILM WAS TAKEN AT THE SLOW SPEED OF SIX FRAMES A SECOND - AND WAS TRANSMITTED TO LONDON BY THE ATLANTIC CABLE.

THE PICTURES CLEARLY SHOW MAJOR WHITE, DRESSED IN HIS SPECIAL SPACE SUIT EMERGING FROM THE CRAFT AND "SWIMMING" IN SPACE ON THE END OF A LONG LINE. BEHIND HIM CAN BE SEEN THE CURVATURE OF THE EARTH - REVOLVING SLOWLY AS THE GEMINI CRAFT SPEEDS AROUND IT AT 5 MILES (8 KMS) A SECOND.

DURING HIS WALK IN SPACE, WHITE MOVED HIMSELF ABOUT WITH SPURTS OF OXYGEN FROM A SPACEGUN. AS HE MOVED, HE KEPT CHATTERING EXCITEDLY OVER THE RADIO TO HIS COMPANION, MAJOR JAMES McDIVITT INSIDE THE SPACECRAFT. WHEN MCDIVITT ORDERED HIM TO RETURN TO THE CAPSULE AFTER HE HAD BEEN OUTSIDE FOR MORE THAN TWENTY MINUTES, WHITE SAID "THIS IS THE SADDEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE."
