Dr. Milton Obote, the deposed President of Uganda, announced in a press conference in Dar?
Dr. Milton Obote, the deposed President of Uganda, announced in a press conference in Dar Es Salaam on Tuesday (26 January) that he intended to return to Uganda where, he said, heavy fighting was continuing. He said Radio Uganda, which announced the takeover, had been manned by foreigners and he accused Israel of being involved.
Dr. Obote, who was on his way from the Commonwealth Prime Minsters conference in Singapore when the army takeover was announced, said foreign forces were behind what he called the attempted coup. He added that many people had been murdered in cold blood.
"As I speak now, there is no peace in Uganda and no question of any takeover" he said. Asked if he had appealed for military assistance, Dr. Obote would only answer that he had not asked any country for asylum.
The man to merge from the military coup as the new leader of Uganda is Major-General Idi Adim. He has stated that Dr. Obote is welcome to return to Uganda whenever he pleases.
