  • Description

General elections will be held this year in Bangladesh and there will soon be a return to free political activity, President Ziaur Rahman announced at a public meeting in Narsingdi, 25 miles (40 kilometres) north-east of the capital Dacca on Sunday (29 January).

SYNOPSIS: Huge crowds turned out to hear President Zia at Narsingdi. Political supporters say the meeting was the beginning of a major meet-the-people tour prior to the proposed elections later this year. The leaders of other political parties accuse President Zia of trying to build up his own image when public meetings are otherwise banned. Bangladesh currently has 18 political parties, but martial law regulations prevent them from addressing public meetings.

President Zia told the meeting he would give up military duties and join politics. He said he favours a Presidential form of government along French lines in Bangladesh with the direct election of a President. He said the parliamentary system had proved to be unsuccessful.

President zia has ruled Bangladesh for two years since a series of military coups brought him to power. Preparations were made for elections last year, but later postponed.
