  • Description

The 35-nation European Security meeting opens in Belgrade, the Yugoslav capital next week to review progress since the historic 1975 Helsinki Summit on European Security and Co-operation. Delegates attending the preliminary stages of the meeting will probably receive a message on disarmament, brought to them in Belgrade by a group of young men who drove all the way from Finland to deliver it.

SYNOPSIS: On their way through Yugoslavia on Tuesday (7 June), the group, calling themselves the Disarmament Relay for Peace, stopped in the city of Ljubljana with their message of "no future without disarmament".

The group left Helsinki on the 17th of April and drove through Sweden, Norway, Denmark, West Germany, Austria and into Yugoslavia. They plan to arrive in Belgrade two days before the conference starts on the 15th of June, and to hand their message, urging disarmament, to the Yugoslav League for Peace. It will, in turn, be passed on to the Yugoslav State Secretary to present to the conference president. After the meeting Ljubljana's Mayor Kovic in the City Hall the group leaves for Zagreb. The seven young men, from Japan, West Germany, Switzerland, France, Britain and Sweden, have vowed to tell the European public the full story of disarmament, and they hope to meet the conference's committee for disarmament in Belgrade to get a better idea of the problems.
